UK · CHAPTER 1

Why the UK,and is it right for you?

The UK offers one-year taught master's degrees, globally recognised universities and a post-study Graduate visa. The trade-offs are high tuition and London living costs, no dependants for most master's students, and a Graduate visa that shortens from two years to 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027.

What the UK does well

  • One-year master's degrees save a year of living costs and lost income compared with two-year programmes.
  • Many universities appear in global rankings, and UK degrees are widely recognised by Indian employers.
  • Everything is in English, so there is no second language to learn for daily life.
  • Large Indian community and direct flights from major Indian cities.
  • A Graduate visa lets you stay and work after your degree without employer sponsorship.

The honest trade-offs

Tuition is among the highest in Europe, and London rents are expensive. A one-year master's also leaves less time for internships before the job search starts.

Since January 2024 most master's students cannot bring dependants; only postgraduate research students and government-sponsored students can. The Graduate visa falls to 18 months for non-PhD applications made from 1 January 2027.

Skilled Worker sponsorship after the Graduate visa needs a job that meets salary and skill thresholds, which rose in July 2025.

Who the UK suits best

  • Students who want a respected master's in one year
  • Business, finance, law, data, engineering and public-health applicants
  • Students comfortable investing more for a shorter programme

Checks before you commit

  • Is the university a licensed Student sponsor? (search the Home Office register)
  • Does your subject need ATAS clearance? (many science, engineering and technology master's do)
  • Will you apply for the Graduate visa before or after 1 January 2027? It changes the length.
  • Can you show the money for 28 days before applying?
  • Do you plan to bring family? Only PhD and research master's students can.

QUICK ANSWERS

Your questions, answered.

Yes, for students who value a one-year master's and strong university brands. Plan for higher costs and an 18-month Graduate visa if you apply for it from January 2027.
