Personal statement,references and CV.

UK admissions tutors want a personal statement that shows subject interest, preparation and fit with the course. UCAS has its own structured statement for bachelor's applicants; master's statements are usually 500–1,000 words. Two academic references are standard.

Master's personal statement structure

  1. 01

    Your motivation

What draws you to the subject, with a concrete example.

  2. 02

    Your preparation

Relevant modules, projects, dissertation, internships and results.

  3. 03

    Course fit

Specific modules, staff research or industry links at this university.

  4. 04

    Your goals

Where the degree takes you, and how the UK experience helps.

References

  • Usually two; academic referees preferred for recent graduates
  • Many universities email referees directly — warn them in advance
  • Ask referees to mention ranking, specific projects and skills

UK CV basics

  • Two pages maximum; no photo, date of birth or marital status
  • Reverse-chronological education and experience
  • Achievements with numbers where possible

IN DEPTH · TAP A TOPIC TO OPEN

Personal statement: do and don't

  • Do open with your academic interest in the subject
  • Do mention two or three modules and why they matter to you
  • Do show evidence: projects, internships, results, reading
  • Do explain your career goal in a sentence or two
  • Don't list achievements without linking them to the course
  • Don't use quotes, clichés or AI-generated text — universities run similarity checks
  • Don't exceed the word limit; 500–1,000 words is typical

References that help

UK universities usually want two academic references; for professionals, one academic and one employer. References must come from an official email address. Ask early, give your referee your statement and CV, and remind them of specific work you did. Many portals email the referee directly; your application is not complete until both arrive.

QUICK ANSWERS

Your questions, answered.

Usually 500–1,000 words or 4,000 characters, unless the university says otherwise. Shorter and specific is better than long and generic.
