UK · CHAPTER 2

UK universitiesand degrees explained.

Bachelor's degrees take three years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and four in Scotland. Taught master's (MSc, MA, MBA) usually take one year; research master's (MRes, MPhil) and PhDs take longer. The main intake is September, with a smaller January intake for many master's programmes.

Types of university

The Russell Group is an association of 24 research-intensive universities, but excellent teaching and employer links exist well beyond it. Compare programme content, placement options, location and graduate outcomes rather than labels alone.

Every university that sponsors international students must be a licensed student sponsor. Check this before you apply, because you need a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from that sponsor for your visa.

Russell Group and beyond

The Russell Group is a network of 24 research-intensive universities (including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, LSE, UCL, Manchester, Edinburgh and King's). They are strong in research and graduate recruitment, but many non-Russell Group universities rank highly in specific subjects and offer better employability for some courses. Compare by subject ranking, course modules and industry links rather than the group label alone.

Course formats

  • MSc / MA: taught one-year master's with a dissertation
  • MRes / MPhil: research master's — can allow dependants on the visa
  • MSc with a placement year: two years including a paid industry placement
  • Pre-master's and foundation: one-year bridge programmes for applicants below direct entry
  • Integrated master's (MEng): four-year undergraduate route in engineering
