How this source review works

These country summaries draw on official pages and clearly labelled search listings. The programme research desk provides published tuition and dates. Individual admission decisions, fee exceptions and visa eligibility depend on the applicable requirements. This is a dated editorial review, not a live sync of every university catalogue.

Canada / Admissions

Start with an eligible DLI and acceptance

APPLIES · Public master’s/doctoral PAL/TAL exemption from 1 January 2026

You need an acceptance from a designated learning institution. From 1 January 2026, master’s and doctoral degree students at public institutions are exempt from PAL/TAL requirements; Quebec requirements still apply. Other applicants must check their own category.

Canada / Programmes

Verify the institution and the specific programme

Research universities and colleges through EduCanada. DLI status does not mean every programme qualifies for a post-graduation work permit. Check the individual institution and programme before paying.

Canada / Costs

Updated living-funds threshold

APPLIES · Applications on or after 1 September 2026

For applications from 1 September 2026, a single applicant outside Quebec must show CAN$23,448 for one year of living expenses, excluding tuition and transportation. Accompanying family increases the requirement. Quebec has a separate calculation.

Canada / Scholarships

Check nationality and exchange conditions

EduCanada lists international scholarships. Some awards support short-term exchange rather than an entire degree; nationality, institution nomination and the individual competition determine eligibility.

Canada / Visa

Study permission and travel documents differ

A study permit is not a travel document. Your nationality may require a visitor visa or eTA for entry. Prepare the acceptance letter, applicable attestation, financial evidence and additional documents requested by IRCC.

Canada / Work & graduation

Work eligibility is conditional

Eligible international students may work off campus up to 24 hours weekly during regular academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks when requirements are met. A PGWP has separate eligibility; neither admission nor a DLI listing guarantees one.

Canada / After graduation

PGWP: language and programme checks

Current IRCC guidance requires CLB/NCLC 7 in all four skills for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral graduates, with no field-of-study restriction for those degrees. Other programme categories have different language and field requirements. General eligibility still applies.

Canada / Arrival & housing

Prepare for everyday life in Canada

Confirm housing through a trusted provider, read the tenancy and cancellation terms, and check deposits before payment. Prepare insurance, enrolment, immigration arrival formalities, emergency contacts and a first-month budget with your institution’s international office.
