CHAPTER 1 · THE DECISION

Why France, and is it right for you?

France combines low public tuition, a growing number of English-taught master's programmes, the right to work part-time and a post-study job-search permit. The trade-offs are the French language for daily life and jobs, paperwork, and high Paris rents.

What France does well

  • Public universities charge regulated fees: €2,902 a year for a Bachelor's and €3,950 for a Master's for non-EU students in 2026–27, far below UK, US or Australian private fees.
  • Hundreds of master's programmes and most business-school MSc programmes are taught fully in English.
  • Grandes écoles (top engineering and business schools) are internationally ranked and have strong employer networks.
  • A student visa lets you work up to 964 hours a year and do paid internships that are part of the course.
  • Graduates can stay to look for work and switch to a work permit once they find a qualifying job.
  • Indian master's graduates can request a 5-year Schengen short-stay visa to keep travelling to Europe for work and networking.
  • Health cover through French social security is free for students and refunds most medical costs.

The honest trade-offs

Even in English-taught programmes, everyday life — renting a flat, the doctor, a part-time job — is easier with French. Most graduate jobs outside multinational tech and finance teams expect at least B1–B2 French. Start learning before you leave and keep going during your course.

Administration takes time. You will validate your visa online, register with social security, open a bank account and apply for housing aid in your first weeks. Each step needs a French address and documents in order.

Paris is expensive. Rent is the largest cost and can be double that of Lyon, Toulouse, Lille or Bordeaux. Choose a city as carefully as a programme.

Who France suits best

  • Master's students in management, engineering, data, computer science, economics, hospitality, luxury and fashion business.
  • Students who want a European degree at a lower total cost than the UK or US.
  • Students willing to learn French to B1–B2 for a stronger job search after graduation.
  • Bachelor's students with good French, or those choosing English-taught Bachelor's programmes at grandes écoles and private schools.

Questions to ask yourself before choosing France

  • Will I start French classes now, even for an English-taught programme? Jobs and daily life need it.
  • Is my target programme a state-recognised diploma (Master, Grade de Master, visé) or a school certificate?
  • Can I show €877.50 a month for the visa and cover Paris rent if I study there?
  • Do I want a two-year master's with an internship built in, or the fastest possible degree?
  • Which industry do I want to work in, and is it strong in the city I choose (aerospace in Toulouse, luxury in Paris, pharma in Lyon)?
  • Am I ready for paperwork in French in the first month (bank, CAF, residence permit)?

QUICK ANSWERS

Your questions, answered.

Usually, yes. A public French master's costs €3,950 a year in tuition for non-EU students in 2026–27, and living costs outside Paris are moderate. Private business schools cost more but are often still lower than UK equivalents for a two-year master's.
